Thoughts This February 4th

February 4th has never really been a date with ominous undertones in our home but a series of (truly) unfortunate circumstances through the years has made it an increasingly important one to mention, to acknowledge, and in our way observe. All of you should know that February 4th is considered “World Cancer Day.” Or you should know, unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past decade or so. It’s an internationally observed day intended to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage it’s prevention, detection, and treatment. (source: Wikipedia

In this day and age practically every person has, in some way, been affected by cancer. Honestly, I think it’s probably a pretty rare thing nowadays that a person wouldn’t know someone who has had cancer, or someone who knows someone who has. We definitely don’t need six-degrees of separation to find a link.

Here in the Corner Table House cancer is a disease that we’ve become increasingly familiar with. Both Heli Dad and I have lost extended family member to one form of cancer or other. While the numbers on the Fairest side of things are few to my memory, the extend branches of the Farm Family tree are riddled with it - pancreatic, liver, breast, and more. I’ve known a number of colleagues who have fought, some winning, some losing, against this demon as well. Even now, right now, one of Heli Dad’s best friends is dying from cancer that, despite a valiant and intense battle, has eaten its way through much of his body. He’ll leave behind a heartbroken wife and not-even-2-yet daughter.

While we dread our friends eventual passing every day and on this World Cancer Day he and his family are foremost in our thoughts, it is not just his fight that we think of. Because we also lost Auntie Ell to cancer in December 2017. We lost my Grandma H on February 4th, 2016 to her fight against cancer. And these are just the most recent to strike our family.

For these reasons (and others) our family participated in our local CIBC Run for the Cure in September 2018, fundraising $1000+ towards the cause. #IPromise! The month before that, our cousin VanDani and her Fly Guy raised several thousand dollars while doing a bike ‘Ride for the Cure’-type event. In years to come we will continue to be part of cancer foundation fundraising events such as these.

But today - on February 4th - we aren’t asking for your support or your money.

Today we simply want you to take a moment and think. Think of the loved ones you’ve lost to cancer, of those who are still fighting their fight. Think of the family and other loved ones left behind in the wake of battles lost.

Think of what you can do someday to help.

And if you’re anything like us, today you may hug your family a little bit closer, a little bit longer, or a little bit tighter than normal.
